A Day in the life
'Twas a good week before break. I was very productive and actually began printing off stuff (Woohoo!). I took pictures of the sunset Sunday night and worked on those photos all week, solidfying my panorama and regular photo for the week. There was as good beginning of the class activity where we got suggestions on how to edit certain photos, and I really used those suggestions in my edits. On top of that, I made two of my mats for my panoramas. They are pretty easy to make but just take some time. So far I have made 4 with 4 to go, and then I actually have to print them out. Planning on taking a lot of snowy photos over break! Here is my final Pano and Regular from the week:

This week defintiely didn't start as the most productive week this week, mostly because I was gone for the first two days of the week for college visits. When I got back, I realized I hadn't taken any photos during the week so I was a little out of luck for the last three days of the week. I decided to start experimenting with printing panoramas to get a good feel for how it is going to go. It doesn't actually take too much effort, and I ended up printing out one really good pano during the week. I also brainstormed different places I could take photos for the last three weeks. All in all though, good week. I've attatched a picture of my printed out pano.
Good week back from break. I did one photo shoot during break so I had something to do this week. Similiar to previous weeks, I spent the first two days nailing down my panorama then Wednesday and Thursday editing my regular photo for the shoot. I am slightly stressed about not having printed anything thus far, but I'm going to make time next week either during class or outside of class to do a test run to make sure my plan for my final portfolio presentation will work. This weekend I plan to take at least one photo shoot but I really am waiting for the snow. I want to get at least one, hopefully two good shots overlooking Durango in the snow. Crossing my fingers for the weather but I know this weekend I can at least get some type of photos to work with next week. Below are the two edited photos I produced from my shoot on Animas mountain.
This week was an averagely productive week. I took some good photos overlooking town at night from the top of Smelter, and spent all week putting together the panorama and edited still photo. As I've progressed through my portfolio I have found myself actively looking at the weather, lighting and clouds each day when I wake up. With only three more projects left to add to my portfolio, I want to be really conscious about the lighting and weather during the shoots. I meant to get another photo shoot this week to be completely caught up but couldn't find the time/right conditions. During the break, I will definitely get one and hopefully two more shoots in. I'm excited to see what the weather does - so far my portfolio has shots of sunset, sunrise, and nighttime, and a cool snowy photo (or two) looking down on Durango would be a nice addition. As I edited my photoshoot from Smelter this week I have begun to really dial in the process. First, I take the raw photo to Photoshop and adjust the brightness. I then save the image, open it in LR, proceed to edit the rest of the photo there. I really like messing around with the lighting curves and the de-haze function. Only one photo shoot behind though, and I'm feeling good about my progress. Also, for my still photo this week, I decided to choose an editing style that made the photo look like a painting (edited in LR).
Man, this week went a lot better than last week. I was able to get photos Monday night from the top of Hog's Back and what an adventure that was. I decided I was going to do a sunset/night hike up there, which was great until it got very cold and dark. I ended up getting a little turned around coming back home, but I survived which is always a plus. I wasn't in class Tuesday because I was helping with elections, but come Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I was able to put together another panorama and regular shot from the photo shoot. Both of them turned out pretty well - nothing crazy fancy - but the different lighting is interesting. I'm going to try and get a little bit ahead on photo shoots so I borrowed a camera and am planning two hikes this weekend. I also have a vision that I'm really excited about for my final portfolio. Phew, it's such a better feeling to be on top of things in Adv. Digital Photography right now. Here's a picture I took from the top of Hog's Back on Monday night. I was up there for about an hour, and ran into a couple people. This guy got into one of my panoramas.
This week was kind of a weird week in Open Studio. I could not get my photos uploaded to Weebly due to a combination of 1) Not taking my photos until Tuesday night 2) Forgetting my camera on Wednesday 3) Card reader not working on computer on Thursday 4) Was not in class Friday Definitely a hectic week. My camera is still currently at home as I'm going to take week 4 photos tonight. Life has been crazy, and I can't wait until my last few college applications are in and I start budgeting my time better so I can go on some cool hikes and get follow through with my portfolio. I will reevaluate my initial portfolio schedule at the end of this week to see how plausible going on all the hikes I planned will be. If not, I may have to change my portfolio into just a general "Panorama" portfolio. This week I did get a better sense of how I was going to present my portfolio though, and I have attached a proposed sketch of what I will print for each shoot. With no photos printed and matted yet I'm feeling a little bit of stress, but I think taking the time to get quality photos and just matting them like I've always done is better than stressing to get very creative with my matting. As the semester progresses though, I will keep looking for and brainstorming the best way to matt/present my final portfolio. Whew, one step at a time. My first idea for how I'm going to lay out my photos in my final portfolio presentation, with the panorama from the top on the right and a smaller landscape photo on the left. A custom nameplate (this one says Lion's Den) will go on the top of each photo.
This week was all about refining the same editing process used last week into a more streamlined process. Similar to last week, I took photos early enough in the week to be able to edit them and get a solid foundation by Tuesday. I spent Wednesday and Thursday focusing again on a couple panorama shots that I was able to put together until I had one that I really liked. I then decided that I wanted to give myself some more options for printing as well, so I edited a few more landscape shots that weren't panoramas. Again, I ended up not printing anything this week because I want to see how the panoramas turn out after about 4 projects before I decide on a specific presentation style.
This week was kind of a long one in open studio. I started off the week with having some difficulty uploading my photos to Weebly because of their format (I shot in raw over the weekend). After that, I took Tuesday to try put together a cool panorama and Wednesday to try and focus on a specific photo to edit. Both editing sessions turned out OK, but I never really created something I absolutely loved (I have attached one photo from each session to this post). I ended up not printing and matting any photos this week, but I may come back next week and find one that I really like that fits in well with the portfolio that I will create. I was also gone Thursday and will most likely come in next week during 4th period one day to make that time up. All in all, it was a great learning week and I really refined my vision of what I want my portfolio to be and how I want to shoot my photos.

In the week that we experimented with Lightroom, I really came to like the program although I found it somewhat limiting compared to Photoshop. I found that the editing tools it has really lends itself to Portrait or bulk editing but not as much for more intensive edits with a lot of details. I worked on photos that I took during my self-portrait shoot, and - using the the black and white settings - the edits turned out pretty good. In my own work, I feel like I will use Lightroom when I have a specific portrait that needs to be edited or need to make lighter, more subtle edits. Photoshop is still my photo-editor-of-choice though. |
